Norman, OKAt The David Hooten Invitational, at Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma Dave Schreyer joined an elite fraternity of golfers who can say they shot a 59 or better in a competitive tournament round.

On the strength of today’s opening round, bogey free, 11-under 59, Schreyer joins PGA Tour players Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, and David Duval as well as former Hooters Tour player Sean Pappas. While Jason Bohn and Shigeki Muryama are the only 2 players known to card a round of 58

Pappas shot a 12-under 59 in 1991 while playing in an NGA/Hooters Tour event in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

“I wasn’t really nervous until I was in the scoring tent,” said the Peachtree City, Georgia resident. “I was fine on the golf course, but got jittery when I was adding up my scores.”

Needless to say today’s round was the best of his professional career. The 37-year-old played the PGA Tour in 1992 and the Nationwide Tour in 1998, 1999 and 2002.

“I’ve shot 60 twice at my home courses,” added Schreyer. “But today I played as good a round of golf as I could possibly play.”

Schreyer’s only real scare came on his final hole of the day (#9) where his group had to wait 25 minutes to hit their tee shots.

“Standing on the last tee for 25 minutes thinking about how you’re 11-under doesn’t really help if you know what I mean,” said Schreyer. “I hit my drive in the hazard and had to pitch out back into the fairway. Then I missed my 4 iron to the right of the green which left me about an 18 foot flip shot which luckily I hit to about a foot to make par.”

This past June Schreyer won The NGA/Hooters Tour event in Richmond, Virginia and currently sits 5th on the money list with $62,321.82.

Schreyer holds the clubhouse lead with a 3 shot lead over Elliot Gealy and Scott Peircy who both carded 8 under 62’s this morning.

Following round 2 Friday, the field will be cut down to the top 60 and ties who will compete Saturday and Sunday. The total purse for David Hooten Invitational is $120,000 with $20,000 going to the winner.
