Don't Mess with Van der Walt in Texas
Austin, TX (July 27, 2008)…Dawie Van der Walt (Beaumont, TX) defeated Emmett Turner(Augusta, GA) on the first playoff hole to capture The Onion Creek Classic presented by The Dominion Golf Group over the 6351 yard, par 70 Onion Creek Club for his first ever Hooters Tour title.“It feels great to pull off the win” said the twenty-five year old. “After finishing runner-up in last week's Texas State Open it was nice to get my second professional win”.
The Lamar University three-time All-America fired rounds of 68-64-65-66 for a four day total of seventeen-under par 210 and a playoff victory over Turner.
Ted Potter (Silver Springs, FL) and Mark Wuersching (Queensland, Australia) finished one stroke out of the playoff at sixteen under par for the tournament while Chris Devlin (Birmingham, AL) and third round co-leader Bronson La’Cassie (Queensland, Australia) posted fifteen under par 212 totals, two shots back.
“I drove the ball very well and made a lot of putts this week, which is what you need out on the Hooters Tour especially at Onion Creek where the fairways are lined with trouble on many holes” said the South African born Van der Walt. “You’ve got to be able to go low out here (Hooters Tour) in order to win. The competition is too strong not to, and this tour prepares you for winning”.
Van der Walt collects $33,566 for his first ever Hooters title, while Turner will take home the second place check of $16,671 for his runner-up finish.
The Hooters Tour heads to Houston next week, July 28th - August 3rd, for The Texas Honing Open to be contested at the Golfcrest Country Club.
