News >> Gainey Wins Title
College Park, MD (June 6, 2010)…Former NGA Hooters Tour winner Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey captured his first Nationwide Tour title Sunday at the Melwood Prince George’s County Open at The University of Maryland Golf Club (picture left courtesy of Badz/PGA TOUR).Gainey, who won the inaugural Bentonville Open on the NGA/Hooters Tour in 2007, started the final round three shots off the lead shared by former player B.J. Staten and Jin Park, but quickly went to work on Sunday with four birdies and an eagle over his first seven holes to take the outright lead by two strokes.
After a bad drive on the 9th hole that left him with an unplayable lie, Gainey made a costly double bogey 6 that dropped back into a tie with the pack.
"As bad a tee shot as I hit there, I deserved whatever I made there," he said. "My blood pressure was pretty high and I'll leave it at that."
However, the long time touring pro from South Carolina was able to regroup thanks to his caddie and he rolled in another birdie at number 11 to regain the lead and then two putted the finishing hole for another birdie and a one stroke victory over Frank Lickliter II and Jin Park.
"It's unbelievable. I don't know any other way to describe it," said Gainey. "This is one step in getting back to the PGA TOUR but this is also to say that these guys out here on the Nationwide Tour are really great players. There are no slouches out here."
Gainey closed the tournament with a six-under par 65 after starting the week with rounds of 69-69-64 for a seventeen-under par 267 total.
Gainey earned $108,000 for his first win of the 2010 season moving him from 18th on the money list all the way down to number 2. The Top 25 golfers at season’s end on the Nationwide Tour earn their 2011 PGA TOUR cards.
