Alums Looking of 11th PGA win of 2011-

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - June 22, 2011 - Nearly 200 golfers turned out for the NGA/Hooters Tour’s Texas Honing Open this week in Pearland, Texas. While that number is impressive alone, nearly the same amount of NGA/Hooters Tour alumni are split between the PGA and Nationwide Tours this week as over 150 current and former NGA/Hooters Tour players take part in the Mexico Open and the Travelers Championship.

Last year, Bubba Watson, a former NGA/Hooters Tour winner, picked up his first PGA Tour win in the Travelers Championship. Watson, who played on the NGA Hooters Tour in 2003 and 2004, started the day six shots behind third-round leader Justin Rose. However, by the 18th hole, Watson closed to within one shot of the lead. A birdie on the 72nd hole put Watson in a playoff with Scott Verplank and Cory Pavin. Watson finished Pavin off with birdie on the first playoff hole and sank a three-foot putt on the second hole to edge Verplank.

After his breakout win, Watson has added two more wins this season and sits second in the FedExCup standings and eighth in this week’s Power Rankings, according to PGATour.com.

Former NGA/Hooters Tour Player of the Year Zach Johnson is fourth in the Power Rankings, while former NGA/Hooters Tour winner Brandt Jobe is ranked seventh. Alums have won two of the last three Travelers Championships and combined for 10 PGA Tour victories in 2011. All told, 68 NGA/Hooters Tour alums are in the field.

The Nationwide Tour is also chock full of past and present NGA/Hooters Tour players as 83 have made the trip south of the border for the playing of the Mexico Open.

After losing in a playoff last year in the Mexico Open, alum B.J. Staten enters this year’s event No. 1 in the Power Rankings. Staten, who played on the NGA/Hooters Tour in 2001, 2002 and 2003, is currently 53rd on the money list.

Alum Kyle Thompson returns to action after finishing second last week in the PHS Wichita Open. In his last three events, Thompson has a win and two runner-up finishes. Based on his recent upswing, Thompson, who played on the NGA/Hooters Tour in 2002, is ranked second in the Power Rankings.

Recent NGA/Hooters Tour graduates Rob Oppenheim and Scott Brown are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, this week. Oppenheim, a 2010 NGA/Hooters Tour member is coming off a 10th-place finish and has made his last 15 cuts on the Nationwide Tour, while Brown, a 2008 NGA/Hooters Tour member, has a T3 and a T2 in his last two starts on the Nationwide Tour.

Current NGA/Hooters Tour members and multi-time winners, Will Wilcox and Russell Knox, will look to continue their quest to stay inside the top 25 on the money list this week. Wilcox is 24th, while Knox is 26th. The top 25 at season’s end will receive PGA Tour cards. Current player Matt Hendrix is 28th on the money list.
